Drinking Truth with a capital Tea - created in DALL-E

As I write about this new-ish worldview I’ve adopted, called the Uncult ,  I’m also working on a book that explains everything in one place. Many of my coming articles will be excerpts from that book and I’d love to get feedback from you on how useful/not, how clear/not, and how entertaining/not each of the chapters is. Let’s make the book a collaborative effort, and thank you in advance.

To summarize the Uncult worldview, we are all Characters living in a simulated reality created by an Author, and the illusion is perpetuated by a Voice in our heads that keeps us distracted from what’s really going on. Seeing through the illusion unlocks a life of joy, freedom and abundance.

The term “Character” that refers to humans like you and me reminds us that we are characters created by an unseen Author. A character I’ve created myself is An Hsin, an ancient chinese philosopher that I use as a dramatic foil. For more on the origin of the Uncult and An Hsin, click here.

And now, the Parable of Truth.

A human Character, let’s call him Colin, arrived looking agitated in the way only a mind can when it’s been thinking too much.

An Hsin sat under a possibly-existent tree, sipping a possibly-existent tea.

“An, can I ask you something?”

“You just did,” An replied.

Colin sighed. “Fine. Let me try again. Is any of this stuff you talk about actually true? The Author, the Voice in my head, the holographic simulation… are we really living inside an illusion spun by my mind? Is the Author actually running the whole show? Or is this just another story I’ve convinced myself to believe because it’s comforting and vaguely trendy?”

An Hsin put down her tea. The cup hovered slightly before remembering gravity.

“Ah. The Question. The one everyone thinks is terribly profound until they realize how many headaches it brings.”

“I’m serious.”

“I know,” An said. “That’s part of the problem.”

Colin frowned. “I’m trying to be rational.”

“That’s definitely part of the problem.”

An Hsin adjusted her glasses, searching for a way to translate what was untranslatable.

“Let’s start here. Do you believe in chairs?”

Colin blinked. “I’m sitting in one.”

“Are you?”

Colin looked down. The chair shimmered faintly. Classic simulation behavior.

“Okay, fine. Maybe I’m sitting in an elaborate probability field wearing a convincing chair costume.”

“Excellent,” An said. “Now: is the chair true?”

Colin rubbed his forehead. “It works like a chair. That’s good enough.”

“Exactly,” An said. “The Uncult works the same way. If you want to call it a metaphor, call it a metaphor. If you want to call it the underlying operating system of the universe, do that instead. Either way: when you use it, does it help you stop fighting shadows? Does it lighten the load?”

Colin exhaled. “It does. But that feels like cheating.”

“Of course it’s cheating,” An said, “Freedom always feels like cheating to the part of you that’s addicted to struggle.”

“Freedom always feels like cheating to the part of you that’s addicted to struggle.”

Colin stared. “But I want to know if it’s true. Capital-T Truth.”

An smiled. “You want capital-T Truth? Very well: Nobody knows. Nobody has ever known. Nobody ever will.”

“That’s… unsatisfying.”

An leaned forward. “You’re welcome. The Mind is built to be unsatisfied. It’s like a cosmic search engine with no ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button.”

Colin shook his head. “So I’m supposed to just believe whatever feels good?”

“No. You’re supposed to notice what happens when you believe. Try the model. See how it runs. If it crashes your system, uninstall it. If it liberates you, keep using it.”

“But what if I’m fooling myself?”

An shrugged. “You’ve been fooling yourself your whole life. Now you just get to be a happier fool.”

Colin sat back. “So you’re saying it’s unfalsifiable.”

“Congratulations,” An said gently. “You’ve just discovered the nature of literally everything humans believe. Welcome to the party.”

Colin. “And if I just accept it?”

“Then you stop asking questions like this and start enjoying your Story.”

  1. Read my article about the book that started me down this rabbit hole, Busting Loose from the Money Game. There are more links. It’s a rabbit hole.

After reading the book, I had a coaching call with the author, and he told me his thinking has evolved substantially into a five-day live Ultimate Freedom Experience, and although he doesn’t perform it live any more, there is a video course.

    2. Buy the full 30 hour video course. This is what I did. This isn’t an affiliate link.

The video course broke through something in my psyche, and I got so excited that I convinced Robert Scheinfeld to come out of retirement to do one last live course for me in Toronto Sept 13–17.

    3. Click here if you’re interested in the live experience.
